Are We Really That Different From the French?
Yes, we are. Dev and I recently caught March of The Penguins, a fantastic nature film/documentary about emperor penguins living in Antartica. Like I do with all films I watch, I looked up the film on IMDB to look at the production details and trivia. IMDB had this to report:
- The original French version features dialog for the penguins and a pop music soundtrack.
- Morgan Freeman recorded his narration in 1 day.
What I really don't need is another reason to despise the French. I love the many, many contributions the French have made to the asthetic and art form of filmmaking but putting dialogue and pop music to a beautifully shot and edited film like La Marche de l'empereur is just, well, really French.
Researching a little bit deeper, I find out that a Hollywood suit, Mark Gill was the brains behind this cinema-remix. Maybe he just knew something nobody else did about how much money his idea would reap but it's clear Hollywood needs more executives like this guy. If nothing else, I hope Mark Gill can sleep easier at night than the dirty whoreSuits who greenlight shitty films because the numbers and demographics look good on paper.
